Lovisa Afzelius heads a research unit at Astra Zeneca designing in vitro and in silico experiments to predict how drugs are metabolized, especially by the P450 enzymes. 3D analysis, carried out by the group, has defined the amino acid structures of several enzymes and shown how the amino acids fold to form active sites. In addition to enzymes, Lovisa Afzelius has recently started to investigate the role of transporters, which can modify intracellular concentrations depending on their affinity for different substances.
