We have previously created a network for colleagues working on the genetics of primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) and their treatment within the EU. This project is one of the finalists for the Descartes Prize in 2005. We extended this work to encompass the NAS countries in 2001, again within an EU-funded framework. This has led to a marked increase in quality of the care for this patient category in Europe. It has also led to a scientific advantage for Europe in understanding the background of these diseases and potential cures. China represents a vast untapped resource for patient samples and ideas for future therapy. Professor Hammarström, a professor at Karolinska Institutet, the coordinator of this application, works part-time as a guest professor in the medical school of Peking University (also referred to as Peking University Health Science Center). Karolinska Institutet recently opened an official liaison office on the campus of the medical school of Peking University. The aim of this application for support is to invite the top European scientists within the field of primary immunodeficiency to the First International Conference on PID in China (May 11-12, 2006) in order to raise awareness among our Chinese colleagues. We also plan to create a diagnostic laboratory in the medical school of Peking University that would serve as a node that would perform some of the necessary diagnostic tests and to pass on samples for evaluation by selected European centres. The intention is also to build a PID network among Chinese colleagues (an embryo has already been started) and to build a patient registry that will serve as a platform for future diagnostic and therapeutic work.
